The Karst – Land of Teran
The Slovenian Karst region lies in the south-western part of Slovenia, stretching from the Komen (Lower) Karst in the north to Divača in the south and the Gulf of Trieste in the south-west.
The Karst wine-growing district is located in south-western Slovenia, nestled between the Gulf of Trieste, the foothills of the Vipava Valley, and the hills of the Brkini region. The entire Karst area belongs to the Mediterranean zone and extends across elevations of 200–300 metres above sea level. The uniqueness of the Karst landscape arises from its geological and climatic characteristics.
However, the Karst is not famous only for its geology and climate. These special conditions also make it possible to produce exceptional local culinary delicacies: Karst prosciutto, so distinctive due to the bora wind in which it is cured, and of course Teran. This is the true homeland of Teran. The relatively heavy, clay-rich Terra Rossa soil, together with a warm and dry climate, abundant sunshine and the powerful bora wind, creates perfect conditions for the Refosco (Refošk) grape variety to produce the well-known Karst wine — Teran.
